Treasures from the Collection

Jane Austen’s House Museum holds an unparalleled collection of objects relating to Jane Austen and her close family circle.

Here you can see some of the treasures of the collection, ranging from books and letters to pieces of furniture, clothing and paintings. Many of these objects can be seen in the House, although for conservation reasons some objects may be periodically removed from display.

The descriptions that accompany these objects have been compiled by staff, trustees and friends of the Museum, each providing a unique and personal way in to understanding that object.

This online collection began in 2017 as part of Jane Austen in 41 Objects,  a project that took place to mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death.

Click on the images below to find out more about each object.

The Jane Austen in 41 Objects project was generously supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund as part of the Museum's 2017 programme, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the death of Jane Austen. Photography by Peter Smith of Newbery Smith Photography, excluding images of manuscripts, courtesy of Hampshire Records Office and Hartley Library, University of Southampton.
