About Jane Austen's House

Forthcoming Performances and Lectures

23 Jun 2012
Parlour Music - Harp Concert - Mike Parker
The harp is perhaps one of the most iconic images of music making in the period of Austen's works, but 'the harp' of the time is very different to its modern counterpart. Here is chance to hear the instruments Austen would have been envisioning as she wrote, and to explore the 'domestic' repertoire her harpist characters would have been familiar with. Music by composers including Carl Friedrich Abel, John Wieppert, Sophia Dussek, her daughter and her husband, and others largely unheard of today on three instruments that were there at the time, along with a little harp history, and perhaps, just a little scandal! .

Persuasion Play Reading
More than seven years prior to the events in Persuasion, Anne Elliot falls in love with a handsome young naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, who is intelligent and ambitious, but poor. Sir Walter, Anne's father and lord of the family estate of Kellynch, is dissatisfied with her choice, maintaining that he is not distinguished enough for their family. Her friend and mentor, Lady Russell persuades Anne to break off the match.

Now, aged 27 and still unmarried, Anne meets Wentworth again when his sister and brother-in-law, the Crofts, take out a lease on Kellynch. Wentworth, now a captain, is wealthy from wartime victories in the Royal Navy and from prize-money for capturing enemy ships. However, he has not forgiven Anne for her rejection of him.
